Forum Sexualaufklärung und Familienplanung Special Issue 2011

This topical issue of FORUM on “Teenage pregnancy today” is a special issue designed as part of BZgA’s information package on “Prevention of pregnancy in underage girls”.

Like the previous issue on the same subject, FORUM 2/2007, it provides an overview of current data from the Federal Statistical Office on pregnancy terminations and births among underage mothers.

In addition, in this issue, Evelyn Laue’s article gives an international comparison based on data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). We have again asked the Finnish expert Osmo Kontula to report on current trends and determinants in birth rates among underage girls. His analysis is mainly based on data from the Council of Europe and the World Bank.

The article by Silja Matthiesen and Gunter Schmidt describes young men’s feelings about pregnancy and pregnancy termination in their young partners, the influence they have over these decisions and the sociodemographic information which is available about them. The fourth and final article by Stefan Krings, René Domschat and Anke Erath describes the innovative and successful project “Get going – my strengths, my future” [Komm auf Tour – meine Stärken, meine Zukunft], which encourages schoolchildren in seventh and eighth grades to think about their future career and life plans in an entertaining way. Evaluation results are already available for this project. Since “Get going” is mainly used in secondary schools [Hauptschulen], comprehensive schools [Gesamtschulen] and special schools [Förderschulen] and gives girls and boys ideas for their own life planning, it also contributes to strategies for the prevention of unplanned pregnancies among young girls.

As all these articles clearly show, unplanned pregnancy at a young age is closely associated with social deprivation, in Germany as in all European countries.
